About FYD

Who We Are
The Florida Young Democrats (FYD) is a youth-led political organization dedicated to educating and turning out young voters in Florida.  FYD mobilizes young people under 40 to participate in the electoral process, influences the ideals of the Democratic Party and develops the skills of the youth generation so they can serve as leaders at the local, state and national levels.

Our Mission

Strengthen the Democratic Party by building a strong, vibrant, reliable and active bloc of young Democrat voters, and secure the future of Florida’s Democratic Party by identifying and developing this new next generation of Democratic voters and leaders.

What We Believe

It is often said that young voters are the future of the Democratic Party, but we are so much more – we are the backbone that will make it strong today and ensure its vitality and success for years to come.   WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE VOTE, DEMOCRATS WIN. And young people will vote when their peers reach out to them where they live, work and play to educate them about the importance of making their voices heard.

It’s never too early to start talking to young voters!  Studies have shown that when a new voter casts a ballot for a political party three elections in a row, they are likely to remain a loyal party voter for the rest of their lives.  By consistently and repeatedly reaching out to young voters, FYD will create a bloc of young voters who make voting – and voting for Democratic candidates – part of their civic identity.

Why Young Voters Matter

AT 50 MILLION STRONG AND GROWING, THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION RIVALS THE BABY BOOMERS IN SIZE TODAY AND WILL MAKE UP 1/3 OF THE ELECTORATE BY 2015. Members of the most diverse generation in history, and the only age demographic to vote overwhelmingly in favor of John Kerry in 2004, studies have shown that we identify as Democrats more strongly than any other age demographic.  What’s more we are engaged, volunteering in record numbers for causes and candidates we believe in and voting to support the candidates who reach out to us and take on the issues that matter most.

Young Democrats of America

FYD is a chartered chapter member of the Young Democrats of America (YDA) is the largest youth-led, national, partisan political organization. YDA mobilizes young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process, influences the ideals of the Democratic Party, and develops the skills of the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local and national level.

YDA has chartered chapters in 46 states and U.S. territories with over 1,500 local chapters. Our 150,000+ members – including middle school, high school and college students as well as young workers, young professionals and young families – reflects the broad diversity of our nation and the Democratic Party. Our programs engage Young Democrats through their local county, college, or high school chapters, through state and regional programming, and nationally through events like our national convention and issue advocacy work.

The Young Democrats of America has been the official youth arm of the Democratic Party since 1932. Since 2002, YDA has operated independently of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) as a non-federal 527 political organization.

YDA’s campaigns and programs are aimed at building a sustainable youth movement. Through trainings, hands-on campaign experience, and leadership opportunities, YDA provides the infrastructure for young people to engage in partisan civic participation and prepares the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local, state, and national level.
